I recently came across some fabulous recycled homeware products that I want to share. Made from recycled paper, these place mats are really strong, durable and stylish.
I asked Ian Carter-Brown, owner of Fair Grounds, a fair trade company in Bradford, if they were heat resistant and sturdy enough to withstand straight-from-the-oven casserole dishes and hot plates. Ian assured me they were professionally treated and used in busy restaurants. He added that one restaurateur had remarked how strong the placemats were, only replacing them only once a year! Well I don’t have a restaurant, or even a cafe, but I do have friends over for dinner and these coasters and mats make for interesting table talk.
Fair Grounds imports the handicrafts from co-operatives in India as well as the Philippines, Kenya and Uganda. All products are ethically sourced and the some of the profits go into education development programmes in the UK and overseas – so the recycled paper placemats form part of a much longer story, one that goes beyond dinner.
